Introduction
First steps, first words, first...taste of sugar? When it comes to celebrating baby milestones, the day they're introduced to the extraordinary taste of sweeteners ranks up there as a notable parent favorite. And, because doctors usually clear infants for sugar around their first birthdays, birthday cake smashes (and cake smash photography) have become increasingly popular. Not only are they typically a tasty and exciting experience for the little one, but this initial introduction also elicits significant (and oftentimes hilarious) responses, making it a memorable event families love to document.
As a photographer, I never tire of photographing cake smashes. Every baby has a distinctive personality that always shines through in their approach to exploring anything new, which is always a joy to capture behind the lens. Additionally, photographing their tiny faces full of unadulterated enjoyment and curiosity (and cake) offers me the opportunity to record a range of uninhibited emotion rarely expressed by adults.
The trend, which emerged somewhere in the past seven to eight years, has flourished with the help of bloggers and photo-sharing apps like Instagram. Since its conception, this pastry-centric life event has become a photography essential, and shows no signs of fading away.

Planning Your Cake Smash
There are a couple of things families should consider when booking a photographer for a baby's cake smash photos:
Timing: Aim to schedule the photos as close to the child's birthday as possible, normally within a two-week window is ideal.
Location: What's the vision for this session: Outdoor, studio, home?
Props: Make sure any needed accoutrements are in-hand by the date of the session. For instance, the mother of the baby featured in this blog article ordered the backdrop, balloons, confetti, and costume in advance.
Cake selection: There's no single cake people need to choose here, but I do have some recommendations for features that should be included. These include:
- Frosting: There needs to be fluffy frosting. If the cake is being refrigerated or frozen in advance, be sure to bring it to room temperature before the session.
- Cake: Preferably opt for a fluffy cake. Dense cakes can be challenging for babies to grab, break apart, or hold.
- Decor: Ensure that any decor you want visibly in photos contrasts the color of the cake well and, if something is written, it is large enough to read from several feet away. Notice in the blog images here that the blue "one" is substantial, bold, and vibrant.
Costumes/Outfits: Ultimately, you can dress your baby in whatever you want. I strongly recommend going with minimal clothing or garments that are easy to clean. Similarly, you'll want to ensure that any outfit they wear doesn't restrict their ability to move freely, doesn't obscure their face, and doesn't include any bold patterns (generally solids and/or neutrals are best).

Pre-Session Prep Suggestions
I would never claim that every baby needs the same considerations when preparing for a session. But, there are a few factors that seem to be fairly consistent across the board. For starters, babies should arrive at the session ready to go. This means any feeding, napping, and outfit/diaper changes that need to happen to set them up for maximum comfort and success during your session have occurred before you've arrived. On a related note, these sessions can get incredibly messy. While your photographer will probably have some basic items for cleaning, you should bring any extra clothing, towels, or specialty wipes with you.
Now, we all know that even with every matter above flawlessly prepared and executed, small children are their own people and, as such, act largely outside of anyone's control. Therefore, apart from the physical necessities, you may mentally want to prepare yourself for any unforeseen deviations in the plan due to the needs and whims of your little one. And, to be clear, this actually isn't uncommon at all.
The little guy in the photos, for example, went from a tank that eats literally everything to absolutely uninterested in eating for the first time in his entire existence the day of our session. Go figure. Luckily for all involved, mom knew this child's weakness: Cheerios. So, we wound up scooping out a bit of cake in the back and tucking some cereal pieces in there. Unable to resist, he grabbed for the pieces, took cake with him, and our session persevered.

During Your Session
Typically, a session will be divided into three parts: Pre-Smash, The Smash, and Post-Smash.
During the Pre-Smash phase of the session, we will take photos of the scene and a few portraits of the clean baby.
The Smash phase includes everything from the cake being brought over through its destruction.
Lastly, the Post-Smash phase covers family photos with a cake-covered tot and authentic behind-the-scenes baby clean-up shots.
As mentioned above, sometimes your child might need a gentle nudge in the right direction during their session. Parents/Guardians can help the session go smoothly by singing cheerful songs, coming armed with their favorite snack, or making ~that~ face that always makes them giggle.
